Shanghai Summer School 2019 (Chinese Traditional Music Program), a Shanghai Municipal Government Scholarship Program hosted by Shanghai Conservatory of Music (SHCM), will be held at the SHCM in June and July 2019.It aims at better promoting the international education of the SHCM through more diverse Chinese culture experience program for international students.

  

I.          Theme

Since 2011, the Shanghai Summer School (Chinese Traditional Music Program) has been successfully held for eight consecutive years and achieved good results. The 2019 edition of this event will build on its previous achievements and feature the theme ofChinese National Chamber Music. It will not only present before the students the rich connotations of traditional Chinese musical instruments, but also strive to tell participants how different instruments cooperate with each other and to reveal the beauty of harmony of traditional Chinese music.

Through this Summer School, we will provide a comprehensive program that combines learning, appreciation and experience for international students. Many prestigious educators, professional performers and music teachers in the field of traditional Chinese music will be invited to deliver workshops and open classes; while experts and professors in the field of culture to give lectures introducing Chinese culture from multiple perspectives. There will also be Chinese language lessons to enable participants to master dailyexpressions quickly. In addition, music culture-related field trips will be organized so that students can experience the cultural atmosphere of China and the profoundness of Chinese culture.

  

II.        Time and Contents

1.        Time: June 10, 2019 — July 5, 2019 (four weeks)

2.        Master Class

a)        Advanced Class: Prestigious educators and performing artists in the field of traditional Chinese music will deliver workshops and open classes, and young performers of the SHCM will give training courses for students. They will impart the traditional performing techniques, and help students to develop and improve new performing skills of Chinese traditional music quickly. Besides, this year’s event highlights a chamber music program based on participants’ majors, through which they will experience how different instruments cooperate and interact with each other to achieve a harmonious effect.

b)        Beginner’s Class: Basic performing techniques will be taught by young performers of the SHCM in order to improve the students’ understanding of Chinesemusic culture.

3.        Lectures: Lectures on topics including “The Art of Chinese Music”, “The Aesthetics of Music”, “Chinese Culture”and “Contemporary China” will be delivered by reputed scholars to introduce the development of contemporary China and different aspects of Chinese music culture.

4.        Cultural Activities: We will organize students to visit authentic musical and cultural sites in Shanghai, such as the Museum of Oriental Musical Instruments, Shanghai Concert Hall, Shanghai Jingju Theatre Company and Shanghai Kunqu Opera Troupe. Students will also have the chance to experience the cultural and musical life in Shanghai and surrounding areas.

  

III.      Quota and General Application Requirements

Shanghai Summer School 2019(Chinese Traditional Music Program)is open only to non-Chinese citizens outside China between the age of 16 and 45.A total of 30 applicants will be enrolled as scholarship students, among them 20 are Shanghai Government Scholarship winners, and 10 SHCM scholarship winners. The fee for application, tuition, accommodation, activities, teaching materials and comprehensive insurance will be covered by the scholarship, while meal and transportation expenses should be borne by students themselves.

Selection will be organized by the organizing committee based on the application materials and the list of admitted students will be published on the website of the International Students Office of Shanghai Conservatory of Music: http://iso.shcmusic.edu.cn.

  

IV.     ApplicationRequirements

1.      Application Period: March 10, 2019 to April 20, 2019

2.      Documents required for application:

a)      Application Form for Shanghai Conservatory of Music “Shanghai Summer School 2019 (Chinese Traditional Music Program) for Foreign Students”

b)      A photocopy or scanned copy of the photo page of the applicant’s passport

c)      Resume

d)      Three passport-size photos

e)      Advanced Class applicants should also submit CD or DVD recordings (two pieces of music that last about five minutes in total), or send the digital recordingsby email to 2205542773@qq.com.

Please mark the email with “3S Program: Your name - nationality,”

e.g.: “3S Program: Mike - US”

3.      Fees

The fees for application, tuition, accommodation, activities, teaching materials and comprehensive insurance will be covered by the scholarship, while meal and transportation expenses should be borne by students themselves.

4.      Application procedures

a)      Download the application form on the website http://iso.shcmusic.edu.cn and fill the form in Chinese or English as required.

b)      All documents should be sent by post or by email.

c)      Shanghai Conservatory of Music will review the application documents, and send by post the Admission Notice and Visa Application Form for Study in China to qualified applicants (Applicants are required to provide accurate address information and mobile phone number on the application form to ensure that you will receive the Admission Notice and Visa Application Form for Study in China). Admitted students must procure a Student Visa(X1 or X2 Visa)before entering China for this program.

d)      Admitted students should register at Shanghai Conservatory of Music on the date stated in the Admission Notice. Those who fail to register on time will be deemed to have waived the right to participate in the program, unless he/she has informed and got the approval of the International Education Division of the SHCM in advance.

e)      All the application documents will not be returned.
